Hi,
I need some help. I have just managed to get an old and unkempt vineyard. The grape is Merlot, which is what I wanted. My problem is that I don’t know where to start with the pruning. I started in the usual way, but I quickly noticed that last years grapes were on nearly all of the canes, so now I am totally stumped. Am I correct in thinking that if last years shrived up grapes are on a cane it means that they are used and I cant use them as a fruiting cane for this year? If so, what do I do now? I really need to get back to pruning as it is 29th March today I am in (Bulgaria). I would really like to have some grapes this year, and I really worried about messing the whole thing up. Any help would be appreciated.

Tamara,

Wait until early spring to prune. If you have no choice, then you can prune back some of the canes, but do not overdo this.

The key is to look after the vine during the active growing season and not to let it get out of hand then.

My question is: "Why do you want to hard prune just before the dormant season?"

Remember, the vines need to harden for winter and pruning them now, could stimulate new growth. Rather wait until early spring to prune the vine, and wait even longer (just before bud break) if you live in a very cold climate.

How terrible is it to hard prune in the early fall while the leaves are still green?

Also, regardless of when I do it, will a hard prune hurt the roots since there won't be enough leaves to feed them?

I have inherited a grapevine that is completely overgrown and unruly, but it is now the middle of June...should I prune it now or wait until winter? If I need to wait until winter can I at least cut it back to make room to move around it meanwhile?

Can I do this hard pruning now, in the middle of winter? Or is there a better time?

I found this question, answer and photo explanation very informative. I used to grow grapes years and years ago but did so on wood pole fencing. This outcome for the trellis as you show in the photo is just what I need for my new pergola. I have five new grapes growing and expect the same kind of outcome. I just need to decide how to prune them late winter next. Thanks
