Hello everyone, I grow grapes here in Philippines which is a tropical country. With help of Mr. Danie Wium tips, I was able to produce 1kilo of fruit in a one year and two months old grape vine.Lately, I pruned my grapes for the second time. And hopefully this coming August i will harvest my grapes.By the way, I planted WHITE MALAGA and BLACK RIBIER variety of grapes, similar to those planted in other tropical countries particularly in Thailand,Vietnam...
-ROY

Hi Terry,

I'm not an expert in the field of forced dormancy, so what I will share with you in this comment, is what I know about the subject.
-----------------------------------

Covering the roots wount do any good, as the roots are spread out and cover a large area around each vine.

I do understand your concern when it comes to removing the leaves of an active growing vine to force dormance. Removing the leaves will not kill the vine for sure and I don't think it will be killed by the sun or high temperatures as well.

Remember Terry, that forced dormancy should be started at the beginning of the dry season and also stop watering and feeding the vine to slow down the growth of the vine to prepare it for pruning.

I have owned property on the Marajo Island near the mouth of the Amazon River in Brasil since 1962. A Russian gentleman tried raising grapes about that time with no sucess. I know one friend with one vine that produces very few grapes. I would like to contact the gentleman in the tropics for advice. Thank you,
John

Thankyou for sharing about your tropical grapes! I am soo grapeful! I lived in Hawaii and worked at the Volcano Winery, and although they grow grapes for show, they do not produce, and therefore import syrup from the Napa Valley.I have always wanted to grow grapes on my property. Thankyou! ~ Jennifer
