{"id":420,"date":"2009-10-28T08:18:34","date_gmt":"2009-10-28T06:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.my-grape-vine.com\/blog\/?p=420"},"modified":"2012-09-11T11:35:56","modified_gmt":"2012-09-11T11:35:56","slug":"no-grapes-on-my-grape-vine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.my-grape-vine.com\/blog\/no-grapes-on-my-grape-vine\/","title":{"rendered":"Why aren&#8217;t there any grapes on my grape vines?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!-- google_ad_section_start --><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">At least one out of every ten emails I receive, has something to do with either &#8220;no grapes on a grape vine\u201d, or \u201ctoo small berries\u201d, or \u201cnot enough grapes\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This is for sure the most common question asked by new grape growers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately, it is on the most difficult to answer as well, because there are a couple of reasons why this happens.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ll try my best to give you some tips on how you can improve the fruitfulness of your grape vines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The first and most important thing you should always remember;<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A grape vine needs proper sunlight to initiate the development of flower clusters inside the buds.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When you look at a the green shoot of a grape vine, you will see hundreds of buds situated between the leafstalk and the shoot itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\" align=\"center\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.my-grape-vine.com\/images\/bud-on-shoot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"308\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The grape vine bud is actually a compound bud, with a primary, secondary and tertiary bud situated next to each other.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Generally, the primary bud contains leaf and bunch primordia that produce 6-10 leaves and two bunches, respectively. If the primary bud develops into a new shoot in spring, the secondary and tertiary buds remain small.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Anything that cause the primary bud to under develop or die, is what we call Primary Bud Necroses (PBM) and will greatly influence how many grapes your grape vines will produce. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Have no clue what I have just said?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Right, let me explain in laymen\u2019s terms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The green shoot with buds shown in the picture above, is one-year-old growth from the <strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">current<\/strong> growing season.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>These buds will produce shoots in <strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">next years growing season<\/strong>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, the small shoots and bunches that will appear next year, is initiated inside the buds during the <strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\">current<\/strong> growing season. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The following pictures shows a bud on a shoot that is starting to go dormant.\u00a0 This bud will produce grapes next year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.my-grape-vine.com\/images\/bud.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"297\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So, if your grape vine grows in the shade, or is too compact, and no sunlight can penetrate the canopy, then next years crop will be lighter.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is why I always keep hammering on proper canopy management and choosing the right spot to grow your grape vines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">One of Crimson Seedless vineyards is situated\u00a0close to my garden.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>On average, the grape vine closest to the garden, produce only half the number of bunches it is suppose to have because of an over shading tree that grows in my garden.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Incorrect Pruning Methods<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I didn\u2019t mention this first, but it is just as important as having proper sunlight penetration into the grape vines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Remember, the fruitfulness of varieties differ, that is why some grape varieties are pruned with spurs and some pruned with canes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The buds on variety like Crimson, initiate flower clusters from the 4<sup>th<\/sup> bud onwards (counting from the base of the shoot).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you prune the dormant cane back to 2 or 3 buds, you remove the most fruitful part of the cane where most of the grapes are!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I\u2019ve seen pictures of grape growers, who prune almost all of the previous growing season\u2019s growth away.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remember, without properly planning your pruning actions and by simply pruning everything away, you will reduce the crop size.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Too vigorous growing grape vines<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Over fertilization or a too vigorous growing grape vine, will cause problems in the blooming stages.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just like any other plant with flowers, the grape vine produce flowers as well, that needs to be pollinated to reproduce \u2013 the basic instinct of the grape vine is to survive and reproduce new grape vines.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If your grape vine grows too vigorous, the vine will get the \u201cmessage\u201d , \u201cOkay, I\u2019m doing fine, so there is no need for too many grapes!\u201d.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The grape vine then shed flowers to make the crop lighter \u2013 not what YOU want isn\u2019t it?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Another problem with a too vigorous growing grape vine, is sunlight penetration into the vine \u2013 mentioned above.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Diseases<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Not only will diseases like powdery mildew and botrytis attack flower clusters, causing the flowers to abort, but there are mites that attack the buds on the grape vine themselves.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rust mites feed predominantly in the outer bud scales and bud mites feed on internal bud tis<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">sue<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">, causing damage to the small flower clusters inside the buds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The use of Gibberellic acid (GA3)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Gibberellic acids are naturally produced plant growth hormones that affect cell division and cell elongation in stems and leaves. Commercial grape growers use GA3 to increase berry size and also for thinning out of bunches with varieties like, Thompson Seedless, Flame Seedless and many more.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Unfortunately, GA3 cause unfruitfulness to the grape vines, so proper use of this product is of the utmost importance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><strong style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Male grape vines<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Most of the commercial grape varieties grown these days, produce male and female flowers, so no cross pollination is needed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">However, some grape species like vitis Reparia, produce only male flowers.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>For the average grape grower, this looks promising during flowering, as they produce literally thousands of flower clusters, but these flowers will never produce grapes, they will only fall off.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Some nurseries sell these grape vines to people who wants to cover a pergola for the beauty of it alone, and not for grapes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you bought a house with a grape vine on a pergola or fence, that doesn\u2019t produce grapes, then the chances are good that it is a male grape vine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If your grape vine produce no grapes, then I do hope that this article gave you some insight on how you can correct the problem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;
