Leaf pulling video
Hi again grape growing friends.
Just a quick update on the “leaf pulling a grape vine” blog post from yesterday. This video I found on YouTube will confirm what I’ve said in the previous article about leaf pulling.
See how the guy (the farm worker, not the actor) is removing the basilar leaves to expose the grapes to more sunlight. As said earlier, this is hard work and takes up allot of time.
I’ve had a question about sunburn when you do leaf pulling. Some varieties are more susceptible to sunburn than others, so if you have one of those, you need to do leaf pulling very carefully. Do not open up the roof of the canopy so the grapes will hang in direct sunlight, but remove leaves touching the grapes.
Take your time, and do leaf pulling properly. As said earlier, you will reap the rewards. I promise.

I enjoyed the video, I can’t believe that they have not developed a simple way to remove the leaves after all these years, can you imagine what the leaf puller workers backs must look like after a few years of doing that type of labor. Its appalling I really hope they put some effort into developing even some sort of seating device to get the work done more efficiently rather than hunching over all day.
I told you it’s a tough job Spencer! 🙂
Luckily, not all trellis systems are that close to the ground.

Hi Danie, thank’s for video on leaf pulling. I had a bad year with late frost on new growth, then high winds & rain that flattened the vines, I tied them up but got them all bunched in the bad weather, with a tangle of canes that qickly tide themselfs together with their curly threds, this held the damp from the wet horible summer here in Norfolk UK, so we had mildew. But we will crack it next year!. Sorry to see your flooding. hope it works out OK.

Ouch, seems like you had some bad weather yourself. The spacing of shoots and then tying it down to the trellis wires will help prevent this from happening again.
