Razak’s grapes in the tropics

Hi Grape Viners.
I would like to show you some pictures of grapes from a subscriber in Malaysia (tropics). Razak, is doing a fine job growing grapes there! Remember, there is no dormant season in Malaysia, so they have to “force” dormancy by removing leaves, stop fertilizing and watering the vine a month before their dry season and as soon as they are ready, they will “kickstart” the vine by start watering and feeding the vine again.
Growing grapes in the tropics is not easy, I promise you, so Razak is doing a fine job!
Well done my friend!!
Did you know it is actually possible to have to grape crops per season in the tropics!

Here is the email he send me:
“Dear Sir,
1. I would like the express my gratitude and thanks for
being able to get informations and guidance about
grape growing from your blogs.
2. Actually sir,I am from Malaysia, a peninsular
country between Thailand and Singapore. We are in
such a pure tropical atmopheric country and never have
been experiencing grape growing. It is just for the
fun in planting fruit trees in the garden that led me
read a lot of articles on viti culture.

3. After 3 years I began to see the bunch on my
vines. Yes those are my grapes but not as sweet as
what I use to buy at the supermarkets – the imported
grapes.

Hello everyone, I grow grapes here in Philippines which is a tropical country. With help of Mr. Danie Wium tips, I was able to produce 1kilo of fruit in a one year and two months old grape vine.Lately, I pruned my grapes for the second time. And hopefully this coming August i will harvest my grapes.By the way, I planted WHITE MALAGA and BLACK RIBIER variety of grapes, similar to those planted in other tropical countries particularly in Thailand,Vietnam…

Hi Terry,
I’m not an expert in the field of forced dormancy, so what I will share with you in this comment, is what I know about the subject.
———————————–
Covering the roots wount do any good, as the roots are spread out and cover a large area around each vine.
I do understand your concern when it comes to removing the leaves of an active growing vine to force dormance. Removing the leaves will not kill the vine for sure and I don’t think it will be killed by the sun or high temperatures as well.
Remember Terry, that forced dormancy should be started at the beginning of the dry season and also stop watering and feeding the vine to slow down the growth of the vine to prepare it for pruning.
Hi Danie,
I am from East Malaysia, Island of Borneo with Tropical Rain Forest weather.
Could you explain more detail on “force” dormacy which is not in your “Complete Grape Grower Guide”?
What happen to strong sun light, hot weather and frequent heavy rain fal, will these kill the grape when all the leaves removed?
Should I cover the root areas from rain fall? or Should I cover the plant from direct sunlight?
Your kind comments is needed before I risk to force dormancy of my plant…
Terry
Hi John,
As part of my privacy policy, I cannot give you Razak’s contact detail – sorry 🙁
What I will do however, is to ask him if I may give his details to you.
As soon as I hear something I from him, I will let you know.
Take care
Danie
I have owned property on the Marajo Island near the mouth of the Amazon River in Brasil since 1962. A Russian gentleman tried raising grapes about that time with no sucess. I know one friend with one vine that produces very few grapes. I would like to contact the gentleman in the tropics for advice. Thank you,
John
Thankyou for sharing about your tropical grapes! I am soo grapeful! I lived in Hawaii and worked at the Volcano Winery, and although they grow grapes for show, they do not produce, and therefore import syrup from the Napa Valley.I have always wanted to grow grapes on my property. Thankyou! ~ Jennifer
